Stamps mark Rings release

23 November 2002

The latest issue of stamps from New Zealand Post, featuring hobbits and orcs, will be released on December 4 to celebrate the second film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Stamps general manager Ivor Masters said the six stamps and associated products portrayed characters and scenes from the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Aragorn the ranger and Lady Eowyn feature on the 40c stamp, a stark contrast to the Orc Raider, which appears on the 80c stamp.

Wizard Gandalf sheds his grey mantle to become Gandalf the White on the 90c stamp and human servants of the Dark Lord Sauron the Easterlings feature on the $1.30 stamp.

The hobbit Frodo adorns the $1.50 stamp, while the $2 stamp features Lady Eowyn, despairing of what her world has become.

Other products include three first-day covers, six miniature sheets, six maximum cards and a presentation pack.

Last year's stamp issue for the first movie was one of the more popular for NZ Post, Mr Masters said.

The stamps were designed by Sacha Lees, of Weta Workshop, in Wellington, and printed by Southern Colour Print in Dunedin.
